Undercurrent #9: Clearing the Board

More companies are hiring. Fewer are hiring deeply.

Hiring held steady, but the market is shifting.

The market added roles and one hiring employer, but fewer boards looked like expansion boards.

Active hiring moved from 111 roles across 22 companies to 115 roles across 23 companies, yet the number of scaling companies fell from 11 to 10 and median board depth declined again.

The Hiring Index slipped from 154.5 to 153.5, even as the Expansion Rate rose to 19.5%. That is the useful read: the market added roles and one hiring employer, but fewer boards look like expansion boards.

It’s been a couple of weeks since our last update, and there has been a lot of movement across the job market. 

A lot of postings came off the board, including roles from Avalon Holographics, Kraken Robotics, CoLab Software, Verafin, Vision33, Solace Power, and more. This is a positive sign, showing roles are filling, with a healthy pipeline of job postings continuing to indicate growth in the local tech sector.

Unicorn Kraken removed key roles across firmware, QA, field service, reliability, operations, and IT support, while Avalon’s co-op postings also cleared quickly.

There are also a few notable ones to watch. CoLab added a Director of Engineering - AI position to the board, Verlo is looking for its first ever Growth Lead, and Enaimco is in search of a Product Designer, indicating a number of key roles in demand entering the mix.

Fast-movers Spellbook and Nasdaq Verafin are also continuing to hire, while companies that are in a growth phase are posting for key roles to help them scale.
